Become a Lifesaver – Bronze Medallion, Surf Rescue Certificate (adult), Award Member Pathway

Bronze Medallion (15+)

The Bronze Medallion is the core award for surf lifesaver aged 15 year and over.

Completing this course qualifies you to patrol Umina Beach and contribute as a full surf lifesaver. You’ll also earn a nationally recognised qualification: Certificate II in Public Safety – Aquatic Rescue.

Skills you’ll learn:

• Surf skills and negotiating waves
• Beach awareness — identifying rips and currents
• First aid
• Resuscitation (CPR) and using oxygen and the defibrillator
• Spinal injury management
• Rescue techniques, patient carries and preventions
• Signals and radio communication
• Patrol operations and teamwork
• Fitness — running, swimming and paddling in the surf

Prerequisites

• 15 years or older on the assessment date
• Complete a 400m pool swim in under 9 minutes (assessed at PLC before course start)
• Completion of eLearning modules (3 hours) prior to training

Duration: 8 weeks

Costs

• New members: $140 (includes membership ($90 membership fee + $50 course fee)
• Existing General/Parent Member: $90 ($40 membership top-up fee + $50 course fee)
• Existing U15+ member – Free

Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC 13+ including adults)

The Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) is the entry-level award for anyone aged 13 years and over.

It’s the perfect option if you:

• Are 13-14 years old and want to start your lifesaving
• Are an adult new to lifesaving who wants a shorter pathway into water safety at Nippers before committing to a Bronze

Skills you’ll learn:

• Basic surf rescue techniques and patient carries
• CPR
• Beach awareness and surf safety
• Patrol operations and teamwork
• Signals and radios
• Fitness and surf skills development

Prerequisites

• 13 years or older on the assessment date
• Complete a 200m pool swim in under 5 minutes (13-14 year olds) or 400m pool swim in under 9 minutes (15+)
• Completion of eLearning modules prior to training

Duration: 4 weeks

Costs

• New members: $115 ($90 membership fee + $25 course fee)
• Existing General/Parent Member: $65 ($40 membership top-up fee + $25 course fee)
• Existing U13- U14 Nipper Member – Free

Award Member Pathway (13+)

For members aged 13 and above who may not want to complete a Bronze or SRC straight away, the Award Member pathway offers flexibility. Award Members complete specific lifesaving qualifications and play and important role in patrol support. No water activities required.

Possible awards include:

• CPR
• First Aid (14+)
• Radio Operator Certificate
• Advanced Resuscitation (15+)

This pathway is perfect if you want to help on patrol or build your skills step by step towards a future Bronze or SRC.

• Of correct age on the assessment date
• Willingness to contribute to patrol support

Duration: 3 weeks (depending on award chosen)

• Existing General/Parent Member: $65 ($40 membership top-up fee + $25 course fee)
• Existing U13- U14 Nipper Member – Free
